AMERICAN LEGAL
It is important to be informed about legal matters in America. It is important to understand laws and how they affect you, as well as how you should conduct yourself so that you do not break them. When a person finds themselves in need of legal advice or a lawyer, it is important to really understand the laws pertaining to their particular situation.
Legal Resources and Attorney Information
When a person gets caught breaking a law, there is a good chance that they will want to have a lawyer on their side to protect their rights. Some people knowingly break laws and some people break laws without any intention to. Many people occasionally break laws such as rolling through a stop sign or failing to use their turn signal when switching lanes, without even realizing that they are really breaking the law and could be punished for this.
There are many situations where people have not broken any laws but still need the help of a lawyer to protect their rights. Adopting a child, getting a divorce, or planning an estate, are just a few examples of the many situations where people usually need a lawyer’s help.
From the most upstanding and law abiding citizens, to people who think that they are living in accordance with the law, to people who know that they may be in trouble or about to be in trouble with the law, it is important to be informed. In many situations, even when you are not in need of a lawyer or legal advice, being informed about laws and government in the United States may help to ultimately save you time and money in the long run.
Attorneys Compared to Lawyers
When it comes to American attorneys and lawyers, the two terms are used interchangeably and mean the same thing. In some countries that use these terms, there is a clear distinction between what a lawyer is compared to an attorney. A lawyer is someone who has studied law and has a law degree but they cannot do all of the things an attorney can. An attorney has also been to law school and earned a law degree but in addition to this they have passed a licensing or other type of exam.
In the United States, technically, a lawyer is someone who has a law degree from an accredited law school here, whereas an attorney or attorney-at-law, is a lawyer who has also passed the bar exam for the state or states that they want to be licensed in (in order to be able to represent clients in court).
Even though this is technically what the terms mean, they are used interchangeably to mean the same thing, someone who has a law degree from an accredited U.S. law school and who is also licensed to practice law.
Many attorneys advertise and refer to themselves as lawyers. If you are looking for a lawyer, it is always a good idea to make sure that the lawyer you are thinking about retaining is licensed, in good standing with the courts, and does not have any disciplinary actions against them, etc.
